What the tables mean

The Guardian GCSE tables for England are based on data submitted by schools themselves.

They show:

The total number of GCSE candidates
The percentage of candidates achieving five or more A*-C grades in any subjects.
The percentage of candidates achieving five or more A*-C grades
Including English and mathematics
The average points score per pupil at GCSE or vocational equivalent (using the National Qualification Framework tariff - see below), including short course GCSEs.
